Birdsong Trust: Restoring the Dawn Chorus

The Birdsong Trust is a partnership of tourism operators from the Abel Tasman National Park with the Department of Conservation, who have agreed to try to restore the dawn chorus and to protect and enhance biodiversity and improve the visitor experience. DOC's expertise is combined with the Trust's funds and vision. All the commercial operators of the Abel Tasman are members of the Trust and give a portion of each client's trip fee to the Trust. The initial effort involves establishing possum and stoat traps, wasp eradication and bird relocation to Adele Island. This is the first time in New Zealand that all major tourism operators associated with a National Park have agreed to contribute funds for the benefit of the park and its wildlife.
